Seventeen canisters removed from a Cowley house last month have been revealed as pre-Second World War “chemical training aids”, according to the Ministry of Defence.

On July 28, Royal Logistic Corps personnel were called to an empty house on Brasenose Driftway after the canisters were alleged to have contaminated soil at the home.

The canisters were taken to the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory for analysis in Porton Down, near Salisbury, where personnel have determined the canisters to be “pre-Second World War chemical training aids.”

But the MoD has said that canisters did not contain a chemical warfare agent, but it is not know how the canisters ended up at the property in Oxford.

An MoD spokeswoman said: “The training aids were produced to simulate the properties of a chemical warfare agent but do not contain the agent itself.

“They were used for training the army to safely operate in the event of a chemical attack.”
