MORE than 200 cars will descend on Marston this weekend as the Cowley Classic Car show returns for another year.

The show, which celebrates cars from throughout the 20th century, will also feature a convoy from the Cowley Plant to Court Place Farm, Marston.

Mini enthusiast Tanya Field, whose husband Jason works at the factory, will lead the convoy of about 25 cars along the Cowley Road at 10am on Sunday, with the show starting at 11am.

She said about 3,000 people are expected to turn up during the six hours of the show, which will also feature a petting zoo, free vintage bus rides and children’s entertainment.

The 43-year-old from Headington said: “People love seeing these cars because they are cars they had or their parents had or their teachers had.

“People have memories from them.

“We do not all have Ferraris to have memories from.

“There is that connection with people’s lives. These cars are people’s memories.

“Back in the day these cars were not exceptional, you would have seen them everywhere.

“But now you never see them.”

Cars are expected to travel to the show from across the country, but much of the focus is on the Cowley factory, which employed more than 20,000 people in the early 1970s.

Some of its most famous cars include the Mini, Morris Minor, Morris Oxford and Austin Maestro.

Mrs Field has been in Templars Square Shopping Centre for the past week with nine vintage cars to promote Sunday’s show.

Among those she has been displaying are a 1938 Morris Eight, a 1955 Morris Oxford, a 1972 Morris Marina and a 1991 Rover 800.

She said: “We have had a huge reception here. People in the area have done 30 or 40 years at the plant and we have been able to get our hands on an A1 size photo of the plant from the 1970s or 1980s.

“It is a general car show but there is that focus on Cowley so we will have quite a lot of old Morris cars and old Minis.

“The show will also have sports cars that people can go out in and there will be lots of things to do for people who are not quite so into cars.

“It will be a great day and I’m really looking forward to it.”

The show will run from 11am until 5pm on Sunday and costs £3 for adults and £12 for a family ticket.

Children under 12 can go for free.
