Sir – I would like to complete the story of Private Roy Griggs. Further to the archive extract in The Oxford Times of July 30, concerning Private Roy Griggs lost on the Lancastria in 1940 off St Nazaire.
He is commemorated on the Second World War memorial in the north aisle of St Peter’s Church, Wolvercote.
His body was recovered and he is buried in the Prefailles Communal Cemetery 17km south of St Nazaire, in grave number 69.
The majority of the 55 British casualties buried here were from the Lancastria. About 3,000 of the 5,300 troops aboard were lost.
