Drivers faced 11-mile tailbacks yesterday due to a broken-down lorry on the A34.
The vehicle, which was stuck between South Hinksey and Botley Interchange, broke down at about 6.15am.
Police closed the inside lane to prevent an accident but the volume of cars, lorries and vans caused tailbacks from the Botley Interchange as far as the M40 Junction 9 at Bicester.
The road was eventually cleared at around 10am but delays remained until the early afternoon.
Other ways into Oxford, such as the Wolvercote Roundabout, were also affected by the delays.
