RESIDENTS in East Oxford raised more than £1,000 in an afternoon for the victims of the recent floods in Pakistan.

The collection, outside Madina mosque in Stanley Road, will go towards aid packages to be sent to the 110 villages destroyed in the region of Rajanpur.

The fund will provide those returning to their ruined homes with a 15-day aid parcel containing essentials such as rice, sugar, flour and soap. Each package costs just £20.

Pakistan-born Oxford city councillor Saj Malik, who organised the collection with the Stanley Road mosque, said: “I’m pleased with the response. The people of Oxford have always been very generous and willing to donate whenever there’s a disaster anywhere in the world.

“Rajanpur is one of the most deprived regions in Pakistan and they will be very grateful to receive our help.”

Another collection is planned outside the mosque at 1.30pm this Friday and on Friday, August 21.
