MAJOR delays along the A34 this morning due to a broken-down lorry near the Botley Interchange.

One lane is closed while the vehicle is recovered but it is causing miles of tailbacks. Drivers are stuck in queues as far back as the A41 near Bicester.

It's having an effect on traffic at the Wolvercote roundabout, the Woodstock Road, and the Oxford Road as drivers try to find other ways into the city.

Our reporter Martin Elvery became stuck in the traffic. He said: “I left the M40 half an hour ago I’m still five miles outside of Oxford. I fail to see how one broken-down lorry can paralyse an entire road network.

“I’m going to be very late for work and it’s extremely inconvenient, this must be as much about the management of the traffic system, as it is about the breakdown.

“The traffic is so solid it’s hard to see how the recovery vehicle will get through.

“It’s just yet another example of how the city has expanded beyond the road systems that cater for it.”

The lorry has now been cleared but there are still delays.
