Firefighters put on dry suits and were able to pull the man to safety, before passing him on to paramedics from South Central Ambulance Service.

There was no update on the man’s condition.

Watch Manager Jon Walker said: “The man had been in the water some time. He was mildly hypothermic when we arrived and unsure how he got in the water in the first place.

“He was lucky to have been found and not come to any further harm.

“We cannot stress the dangers of open water enough, even at this time of year, especially when combined with alcohol and horseplay.”

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said Thames Valley Police was investigating the incident and asked for anyone with information to contact officers on 101.
