TRAFFIC remains heavy around Oxfordshire tonight, particularly on the A34 at Abingdon and Bicester.

Drivers have endured congestion on major routes around Oxford since the afternoon and the delays have also affected the M40.

Queues approaching the motorway’s junction with the A34 at Wendlebury are currently several miles long, going up as far as Ardley on the southbound approach.

Oxford Mail:

In Oxford, there is heavy traffic approaching Cutteslowe Roundabout along the Northern Bypass from the east and jams on the A420 westbound. Construction work is taking place at both areas.

It comes as what has been billed as the "Great Summer Getaway" begins.

The Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) estimates that 2.1 million holidaymakers are set to head abroad.

Oxford Bus Company has faced major delays to its services, with its Airline bus having to cancel due to the traffic.

They tweeted: “Due to inclement weather causing heavy traffic congestion, we are experiencing heavy delays on all local services.

“The 4pm Airline service from Oxford did not operate and the 5.50pm service from Heathrow will not operate due to delays on the service causing coaches to be out of position.”

Spokesman for Oxford Bus Company Phil Ashworth said: “Services in the city  are running well with only a few delays. However traffic on the M40 to and from London and the airports is very heavy.

“Experts say it is likely to be the busiest day of the summer.”
