OXFORD’S forgotten past was displayed to families for the first time at the Westgate shopping centre demolition site.
Residents were welcomed into Area 3 of the site on Saturday as part of the 25th national Festival of Archaeology.
A team from Oxford Archaeology is recording and recovering the remains of human activity which have survived on the site.
Visitors admired ancient artefacts including pottery and glass, as well as the skeleton of an ox.
Elsa Mornay, eight, from Kennington, said: “I was amazed at the bones of the ox and what gave Oxford its name.”
The next open day is on September 12.
