STUDENTS used prose, poetry, dance and documentary filming to launch a multimedia campaign aimed at tackling prejudice.

The Exploring Prejudice, Tackling Fear project, aiming to tackle racism and all forms of prejudice, was the brainchild of John Mason School assistant headteacher Chris Davies.

Working with parent and artist-activist Dianne Regisford, Mr Davies organised a day of arts and discussion at the school to launch the new project on Tuesday.

Former pupil of Mr Davies, Karim Khan will be making a film of the day which will be broadcast around the school in Wootton Road, Abingdon.

However, Mr Davies said the main focus of the day will be guest speaker Raphael Kuponiyi – dubbed the One Per Cent Kid.

Mr Kuponiyi moved to east Oxford from Nigeria and found it hard to assimilate because of the language barrier and a speech impediment.

At school Mr Davies dubbed him the One Per Cent Kid because he was only given a one per cent chance of getting a C Grade in English and Maths, but managed to get the grades he needed to go university.

Mr Davies hopes that the project, with the hashtag #EPTF will eventually spread around the county.

He said: “We are bringing together a group of students who will eventually become ambassadors for the movement in the school, the community and eventually nationally.

“The results of the end of the day will be an installation at the school.”

Using the event’s theme, Smoke & Mirrors, combined art to make a multi-dimensional visual art installation of art, poetry, sculpture, poetry and dance.
