A WOMAN in her 70s died after a five-vehicle pile-up on the A34 on Sunday.
Four cars and a lorry were involved in the accident, which happened northbound between the Islip turn-off near Kidlington and Junction 9 with the M40 shortly after 3pm.
Thames Valley Police spokeswoman Charlotte Redman confirmed that the driver of one of the cars had been killed.
She said: "We were called at 3.27pm to an incident in Weston-on-the-Green. There was one fatality and their next of kin have been informed."
The accident involved a white Renault truck, a black Nissan Note, a silver Vauxhall Corsa, and a red Renault Scenic. A silver Citroen Picasso was also damaged.
Police said the Nissan left the carriageway and the driver, a woman in her 70s from Huntingdon, died at the scene.
Investigating officer Detective Sergeant Gavin Collier said: “I would like to speak to anyone who saw the collision or anyone who saw the vehicles travelling prior to the collision."
The driver of the Vauxhall was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital but has since been discharged.
South Central Ambulance Service spokeswoman Michelle Archer said: “Five more people were treated at the scene but did not need to be taken to hospital.”
Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue spokesman Gabby Heycock said an air ambulance had been called, but was not needed.
The carriageway remained closed until early evening, causing tailbacks along the A34 as far as the Pear Tree Interchange.
A 45-year-old man from Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, was arrested on Sunday on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has been bailed until July 23.
