THE partner of Witney town councillor Chrissie Curry, who recently died, has pledged to continue her work after being re-elected.
David Harvey, who owns WR Harvey Antiques in Corn Street, was re-elected as town councillor for Witney south ward at a by-election on Thursday.
The election had been postponed from May 7 following Ms Curry’s death in April.
Mr Harvey said he would help ensure Ms Curry’s legacy lived on.
“I’m honoured the people of south Witney have asked me to represent them,” he said. “I’m very conscious of the legacy Chrissie left behind and it will be for all of those who were elected to ensure that these aims were achieved .”
Mr Harvey said he would continue to work on projects championed by Ms Curry, including the Leys splash park and the West Witney skate park.
He said the challenge for the council would be to ensure the infrastructure was in place for a growing town and that there was a commitment to protecting the market town character of Witney.
Mr Harvey had served on the council for 16 years and Ms Curry, a former mayor, had served for 12 years.
Three seats on the council were contested. Conservative Jane Marie Doughty was elected with 302 votes, Mr Harvey, took his seat with 289 votes and Labour councillor Laura Price was elected with 291 votes.
The turnout was just 14.9 per cent.
