YOUNGSTERS with special needs and disabilities enjoyed an Olympic-style sporting event hosted by an Oxford charity.
More than 50 children enjoyed the free sports day, where they were given the chance to try their hand at a wide range of games and activities at the Leys Pool and Leisure Centre on Saturday.
The sporting event was organised by volunteering charity Keen as part of its end of year celebration, with each young athlete being presented with a medal and certificate by Deputy Mayor Colin Cook. The event was supervised by 15 student volunteers, who raised £1,000 for the charity to continue to provide activities for disabled and special needs children and young people.
St Clement’s ward councillor Tom Hayes hailed it as a terrific success for the 25-year-old charity, which runs events for children and young people with disabilities through its 300 volunteers drawn from the city’s two universities.
He said: “It’s so inspiring to see students offer their time to run sports and social activities.”
