Sir – I was looking forward to the last half hour of our six-hour journey back to Oxford from Devon when we got caught up in the huge traffic jam on the A40 on June 5, which added two hours to our journey.
We were stationary for an hour and an hour’s diversion. The accident apparently involved five vehicles.
May I, through your paper, remind people that the speed limit is 70mph on dual carriageways and 60mph on single carriageways.
The Highway Code tells us to keep three lengths apart for 30mph, four lengths apart for 40mph etc. and double that in wet weather. It is not clever to drive badly.
Now that the holiday season is here, please, please, take care when driving to avoid injury to yourself and others, damage to your car and others and great inconvenience to many people.
Take a break every couple of hours for a leg stretch and a breath of fresh air.
Enjoy the summer.
