RACING legend John Surtees added another award to his list of achievements yesterday as he was handed an honorary degree by Oxford Brookes.
The 81-year-old is the only man to have won world championships in both Formula One and Grand Prix motorcycle racing.
In addition to his seven motorbike titles and single Formula One title he was recognised by the Queen in 2008 when he was made an OBE.
He was given the honorary degree in the main hall of the Headington Campus.
Other recipients include writer Dame Hilary Mantel and Sierra Leonean politician Zainab Hawa Bangura.
Oxford Brookes vice chancellor Alistair Fitt said: “I’m pleased to announce the recipients of this year’s honorary degrees.
“Each of the recipients is an exceptional role model for our students, staff and the wider community.
“To have such inspirational figures joining us is a real honour.”
