A SERIOUSLY-injured patient was rushed to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford after being involved in a crash on the M40.

The collision – between a car and a motorcycle – happened on the southbound carriageway yesterday between Milton Common and Wheatley at about 10.50am.

But the motorway was closed in both directions because emergency services shut the northbound carriageway to make room for an air ambulance.

South Central Ambulance Service spokeswoman Michelle Archer said: “Our crews have been working to assess and treat one patient who has sustained serious injuries as a result of the incident.

“That patient has been treated at the scene and taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital by land ambulance, accompanied by a doctor from the air ambulance crew.”

She could not confirm whether the person was a man or woman, or the nature of the injuries.

The blockage of the road created long tailbacks on the M40 but was clear by about 12.20pm.

Bus services were also delayed. On Twitter, Stagecoach reported that its Oxford Tube buses to London were running 30 minutes behind schedule.

At Hinksey Hill in Oxford, a motorcycle and car were involved in another crash.

The collision happened at about 8am on the northbound carriageway, near the southern bypass on the A34.

Police spokeswoman Charlotte Redman said: “There does not appear to have been any injuries.”
