DURING weekdays and working hours NHS Blood and Transplant transport thousands of litres of blood across the country every week.
But during the evenings volunteer motorcyclists will answer emergency calls and transport blood to critically- ill patients across the region.
More than 100 volunteers from the Thames Valley region ensure that someone is always on call to deliver blood to emergencies.
Products from the Oxford Blood Bank can be driven to areas as far as Bristol by blood bikers.
SERV Blood Bikers, which serves Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Northamptonshire and Berkshire, has been running since 1981.
Kennington resident Terry Haynes has been riding with Blood Bikers for four years.
The father-of-one volunteers at least 12 times a year and also raises money for the charity.
He said: “Blood Bikers get no funding from the government or the NHS, so it’s important for us to raise money.”
