THERE were no complaints about school uniform at this school – pupils had designed their own.
Girls at Icknield Secondary School at Wantage wanted to break away from the traditional pleated skirts, white blouses and ties.
So in 1970, they asked headmaster Russell Craggs if he would allow them to choose their own style.
The result was a trendy midnight blue pinafore mini-dress, with full length opening and gold buttons, and a long-sleeved pale blue jumper.
Mr Craggs said: “We gave the girls the chance to choose what they would like to wear. They are pleased with it and so are we. It shows good taste, is modern looking and yet is suitable for school.”
Girls under 13 still had to wear skirts, blouses and ties. “They can hardly wait to become seniors,” Mr Craggs said.
