MICHAEL HUGH JONES is also in agreement with Tony Augarde with his views regarding proposed improvements at road junctions being a waste of taxpayers’ money .

I didn’t realise that the proposed traffic lights at the Wolvercote and Cutteslowe roundabouts were going to cost £9m. That’s a lot of money for something that in all probability will not make a ha’peth of difference to the congestion at these points.

You will have entry lanes unable to access the roundabout when given a green light because traffic from the right is blocking the roundabout because exit lanes are temporarily blocked.

One may just as well leave well alone and save that money for something else.

What is really needed is a relief road for through traffic to ease the congestion – but from what point on the A40 west to where on the A40 east? And then there would be the cost.

Out of devilment, I suggested in a previous letter that maybe an elevated carriageway could be constructed from A40 east to A40 west above Sunderland Avenue for through traffic. What I omitted to say was that the A40 should be made into a dual carriageway from the Wolvercote roundabout to meet the dual carriageway Witney bypass.

Mr Hugh Jones thought the elevated carriageway a good idea and said that it would only cost about £2m but that would be a tad short, just a tad.

I reckon you would have to stick at least two noughts on the end for any such project.

Regarding Frideswide Square, I thought it was stated in the press last year that alterations here would not commence until after the refurbishment of Oxford railway station.
