Sir – Mr McNaney (Letters, June 11) is being rather English and lower-middle-class in dismissing my idea for a sex centre on the A40. Admittedly, sex in public toilets will not get into Debrett’s Guide to Etiquette, but on the other hand it needs to be put into proper perspective.

Under our very noses here in Oxford (in my case one hundred metres from my house) children were being tortured and forced into sexual slavery. I’m sure I’m not the only one to find this deeply upsetting.

The statistics on sexual abuse generally are terrifying. For example, 20 per cent of women have apparently been a victim of a sexual offence or an attempted sexual offence.

And recently, US Baptist minister Steven Anderson prayed to God to rip out the heart of transsexual Caitlyn Jenner. That’s just a taster of society’s grossly dysfunctional attitude to sex, sexuality and gender. Contrary to Mr McNaney’s view, cultures which repress sexuality are breeding grounds for sexual dysfunction.

In this context, I think the men who I assume are engaged in classical cruising activity out at the A40 public toilets should receive golden medals for noble conduct from the mayor.

They are expressing their sexuality honestly with other consenting adults, and with little probability of causing serious harm to anyone else. They are doing better than a great many people in this world evidently.
