HUNDREDS of people are expected to visit the Jericho Street Fair tomorrow.

The annual event in Canal Street will feature live music, dance performances and market and food stalls.

Activities will be clustered near St Barnabas Church, from noon to 4pm. There will also be further live music performances in the Old Bookbinders Ale House from 9pm.

This year a group of 20 traders are also set to hold a pop-up market event alongside the street fair, inside the church.

Organiser Caroline Casey, who formerly ran Jericho’s fresh food market before it closed last year, said there would be an equal split of craft and food stalls on offer, as well as choir performances, a dance group and a magic show for children.

She said: “We are all very excited and happy to be running alongside the historic street fair.

“There will be entertainment inside the church as well as outside, so it will be a double bonus for visitors.”

The pop-up church market will be open from 10am to 4pm.

Mrs Casey added: “If it goes well, we would like to do it every year.”

The Jericho fresh food market was previously held outside St Barnabas Church and later moved to Walton Street due to lack of footfall.

But a failure to agree a new permanent location, and perceived competition from the farmers market held in North Parade, meant that organisers decided to close it.

The new pop-up market is the latest addition to the annual street fair, which is thought to have been a mainstay in Jericho for more than 30 years.

It is organised by the Jericho Community Association with assistance from the Old Bookbinders and St Barnabas Church.

Community association chairman Charlotte Christie said: “It’s a great opportunity for the community to get out on the streets and enjoy themselves and this year we are pleased there will be quite a few stalls, thanks to the church’s offer to host them. It’s a good opportunity for the fair to expand.”

There would also be a bouncy castle, sumo wrestlers and Morris dancing, she said.

Mrs Christie added: “No one is sure exactly how long the street fair has been going for, but we know it is at least 30 years.

“It’s something people always like so we will keep doing it.”
