THE TEAM behind an online archive of wartime photos is looking to uncover the identities of a family captured in a portrait taken in Bicester.

The Army Children Archive (TACA) has come across the family photo showing a father in military uniform with his wife and children.

On the reverse of the photograph is “James and Son Photographers’ Studio, Stowe House Studio, Bicester [Oxfordshire]”.

TACA is hoping to track down anyone with more information about the picture to try to discover the story behind it.

Founder of TACA Clare Gibson said: “This photograph is particularly interesting on account of the clues provided by the soldier father’s uniform such as his cap and arm badges, spurs and whip. It suggests his day-to-day military life involved working with horses.

“Other notable aspects are how close the two small army children seem in age, and how apprehensive their parents look.

“A family name, coupled with the Bicester location, might enable us to find out more about the family using census, parish, birth and marriage records.”

The photograph comes as part of the online archive’s The Army Children of the First World War project launched 18 months ago.

It is part of First World War Centenary Partnership programme, led by Imperial War Museums, to inspire research into lives and stories behind the First World War.
