Sir – In reflecting on the recent election result I have to say that I was only minimally concerned about the differences in the policy positions of the Labour Party, the Liberal Democrats and the Greens.

Given the terrible consequences that will now result from the wishes of only a quarter of the country what I want now is three leaders – one Labour, one Lib Dem, one Green who are all committed to working together in a Progressive Alliance for 2020 (and beyond).

Only such an alliance can have a real opportunity to reflect the values of the majority and restore equity, justice, sustainability and fairness to our increasingly depressed communities. Is it really too much to ask?
