THE youngest parliamentary candidate in the race for the Oxford East seat said he plans to stand again in the next General Election.
Ian MacDonald won 6.8 per cent of the vote standing for UKIP in Thursday’s election.
But despite finishing in fifth place after competing against eight other candidates, Mr MacDonald said he hopes to run for the party again in five years’ time.
The 24-year-old, who won 3,451 votes, said: “This has been an amazing experience for me and I have learned so much.
“It has provided me with a great deal of confidence as well. I think it would be foolish not to stand again. It would be an honour.”
Software developer Mr Macdonald said he was “amazingly calm” before the results were announced at Oxford Town Hall.
Speaking after Andrew Smith was declared Oxford East’s MP for a seventh time, Mr MacDonald said: “I’m really happy with the result.
“I was not expecting to win the seat but it was an excellent opportunity to help change people’s perception of UKIP.
“I think I will come back a lot stronger.”
