SUNDAY’S Town and Gown 10k will see up to 4,000 people dashing through Oxford’s streets, organised to raise cash for Muscular Dystrophy UK.
And Out of them, 100 will be fundraisers from Headington School, which is fielding one of the the biggest teams for the run.
As part of the school’s centenary celebrations, their goal was to have 100 runners in the race to represent each of the school’s 100 years.
Teachers, parents and pupils past and present are aiming to raise thousands for the charity. Among those running will be headmistress Caroline Jordan.
She said: “I am so excited about taking part in Sunday’s run.
“It will be the furthest distance I have completed yet, having taken up running in January 2014, but I know that having Team Headington around me will spur me on to literally go that extra mile.
“Of all the events we have planned to mark the centenary this may be the one which has required the most physical effort, but it is for a wonderful cause.
“I can’t wait to cross the finish line with Headington girls and staff on either side of me.”
Team Headington has been organised by the school’s development services manager Matt Armstrong, who will be among those on the starting line.
Mr Armstrong said: “People have come together from all areas of the school community to take part in the run.
“The idea of 100 runners for 100 years has really captured people’s imagination.
“I know the atmosphere on the day will be fantastic and everyone I have spoken to is really looking forward to taking part.”
Organisers say 4,000 people will take part in either the junior 3km or adult 10km events. They are hoping to raise a similar amount to last year’s record breaking £150,000.
Muscular dystrophy is a condition that gradually causes the muscles to weaken, leading to disabilities.
In some cases the condition can be so severe, heart and breathing muscles are affected.
The charity supports the 70,000 children and adults with the muscle-wasting condition and funds research to find treatments and cures.
Starting at 10am on Sunday in the University Parks, the runners will make their way round the 10k course before finishing back in the Parks where there will be presentations and events.
There will be presentations and events after the race for families to enjoy.
Toya Champ, Muscular Dystrophy UK Challenge events manager, said: “2015 is set to be another record-breaking year for the Oxford Town and Gown 10k.
“We have received tremendous support from Oxford runners, residents, the university and city council.
“All those who register to take part in the Oxford Town and Gown 10k help to fund the work of Muscular Dystrophy UK.
“We know we can raise another £150,000 towards transforming the lives of children and adults with muscle-wasting conditions.”
