Sir – The author of The Woman in Black, Susan Hill, now lives in North Norfolk, Christopher Gray told us in his interview with her (Weekend section, January 22).
Presumably, she doesn’t enjoy (if that’s the right word?) regular access to your paper there.
That must surely be the only explanation why, when faced with your arts correspondent’s vulgar question about money, Ms Hill did not retaliate with her own into his notorious egotism.
As he recorded (proudly?) in his Gray Matter column, even Oxford’s invasive seagulls expressed their opinion of it with copious deposits of white matter!
