Observations about fashion are the last thing regular readers would expect from Gray Matter. The byline picture that has accompanied these pieces for some years — admittedly taken on a bad day dress-wise — says more than enough concerning my own qualifications in the area.
Nevertheless, I am going to venture an opinion on a sartorial subject today in the hope that someone might agree with me. Actually, it is more a question than an opinion. In a sentence, ought the chap pictured above — in a Peter Christian promotion from the Daily Telegraph — be showing that strip of jacket above the collar of his coat? To me it looks really weird (as, indeed, does the strange colour combination, but that’s another matter). I thought at first he was wearing a scarf.
Readers of the Daily Telegraph really take matters of fashion seriously. One wrote to the paper last week to complain about Evan Davies failing to unbuttom his jacket when he sits down. The writer was one Trees Fewster, of Gomershall, West Yorkshire, whose splendid name prompted another reader to write this week saying she should run a garden centre with the recent correspondent Juno Hollyhock.
Fine names both, but nothing to compare with a US golf player mentioned in the Spectator last week: step forward Zenobia Qualls Grizzard.
