MUSEUM staff are planning a new exhibition about Wallingford Castle focusing on newly-researched documents from the National Archives in Kew.
Wallingford Museum curator Judy Dewey said the documents, mostly from the 13th and 14th centuries, are annual building audits and reveal how much money was spent on improvements in and around the castle. The documents will form the basis of a new display at the museum in High Street from Tuesday, March 3, when the venue reopens for the new season.
Mrs Dewey said: “These are fascinating documents.
“Combined with the archaeology that has happened over the past few years they have enabled us to draw together a much more detailed picture of life in the castle, the people and the buildings.
“For example, there was a major storm in 1362 and a lot of repairs needed to be done and that is clearly shown in the documents.
“They also help shed light on some of the more unusual castle buildings, including a Royal treasury, several halls and the great central tower.”
