Sir – I read Howard Williams’s letter with interest (January 8) but, I’m sorry, I still think the Castle Mill controversy is a tempest in a teapot, and should be laid to rest.
Some people may say the buildings are ghastly and ruin views, but this is a subjective matter.
I am a member of the Oxford community and I think they are fine. Indeed, I am happy that students who come to Oxford to study have warm beds to sleep in.
As far as morality goes, I repeat, aren’t there more important things to campaign about? How about disparities in the quality of education Oxford’s children receive? What about the poverty and deprivation many Oxford residents experience?
I for one would be happy to see Oxford’s historic buildings all replaced by ugly concrete, and Port Meadow turned into a giant shopping mall, if it could stop one young life being destroyed by drugs or alcohol. I think we need to get our principles and our priorities right.
