Sir – Hugh Jaeger presumably hadn’t read my last letter in your paper before taking his view of councillor Fooks’s stance on the suggested flyover, or ‘grade separation’ to use the railway term.
The issue is not whether a flyover will be needed in the longer term, as it almost certainly will be if the switch from road to rail continues, but where it will be sited. Adjacent to Port Meadow is not really an option as councillor Fooks has made clear, whereas creating a whole new junction north of the ring road needs to be considered, especially if it can link in with the Cotswold Line.
I am also disappointed that Mr Jaeger hasn’t offered his support to the campaign to reopen the Witney-to-Oxford railway line. This would be a cheaper option than many of the other schemes being suggested by the Tories to deal with the extra journeys from the west of the county to Oxford that are expected as a result of their growth strategy.
His support for the reopening of the station at Grove to serve the Wantage area would also be welcome.
He can rest assured that Liberal Democrats have done far more than any other party in Oxfordshire to promote both rail and other forms of mass transit and thus help to reduce carbon emissions.
John Howson, Liberal Democrat county councillor, St Margaret’s division
