Sir – I was delighted to see the prominence you had given to the letter about the blight on our city caused by roadside litter.
Through our OxClean campaign, we’ve previously persuaded the county council to display ‘Don’t Litter’ messages on the variable message signs, and we hope they will do it again when road works allow.
We do think that takeaway suppliers can do more to reduce packaging and make it more biodegradable. We feel they should do more to urge their customers to behave responsibly.
But it is up to the customers to behave responsibly. We support the fining of those who are caught dropping litter. Through the OxClean schools campaign, we try to urge the next generation of customers to behave responsibly. By getting over 1,000 people engaged in Spring Clean every spring, we hope this encourages more citizens to show respect for our city.
I’m sure many readers agree with Mr Blandy’s sentiments. If any have the time to help make a difference, we would welcome more help in campaigning, with schools and with Spring Clean.
Twenty groups have already signed up for this year’s Spring Clean (March 6 and 7) and we expect many more to join us. Please visit www.oxclean.org.uk, click on Spring Clean and join us or read about our other activities and get in touch.
