“Our resident keeper informed Thames Valley Police who came out to investigate. The police took photos of the skull and sent them off to determine if it was new or old.
“They then left with the skull.”
Police spokeswoman Connie Primmer said: “Officers attended the scene and put in place a scene watch, which has since been lifted. Enquiries are ongoing to establish where the skull is from but at this time it is thought to be historic and is not believed to be linked to any crime. It is currently being examined by forensics and archaeologists.”
While police are in possession of the skull, Oxfordshire County Council archaeologists are helping with the examination.
