SNOW, ice and heavy winds are forecast in Oxfordshire between today and Thursday after a severe weather warning was put out yesterday.

The Met Office announced that between 3cm and 6cm of snow was likely to fall in Oxfordshire from 6pm today.

Oxford is expected to receive light snowfall between 6pm today until 6am tomorrow with temperatures hitting a low of 3C.

According to forecasts, Chipping Norton is expected to receive the most snowfall in the county, with constant showers beginning at 4pm today until 6am tomorrow, and temperatures expected to plunge to freezing.

Met Office spokeswoman Laura Young said: “Today it’s very likely that you will see some snow in Oxfordshire, especially on high ground.

“It’s going to be possibly icy and quite treacherous for drivers, but the snow should be gone by 5pm tomorrow.”

Forecasters predict Banbury will receive a small amount of the white stuff between 5pm today and 3am tomorrow, with temperatures reaching 1C.

Sporadic snow is expected to fall in Bicester for a 12-hour period from 6pm today.

The Met Office also issued a severe weather warning for high winds in the county, with gusts up to 65mph, from 3pm tomorrow.

It said the public should be ready for the bad weather to potentially cause power cuts and disruption to transport.

High winds are due to calm down at 3pm on Thursday.

Residents in Didcot should watch out for snowfall between 8pm today and 9am tomorrow, with temperatures reaching a low of 1C.

Although Oxfordshire did not get a white Christmas in 2014, Benson in South Oxfordshire recorded the lowest temperature in England last year on December 28, at a bracing -7.6C.

The Highways Agency also last night issued a warning to road users across the South East.

It said that high-sided vehicles, caravans and motorbikes were at increased risk of being blown over.
