Sir – I have two grandchildren at different universities (redbrick, long established and with good reputations). One of them is in the first year and one in the third year and I, along with their parents, are very annoyed that these universities are failing to deliver the intensity of education which the parents expect and have paid for.

Both of these students have had only one piece of work marked during the whole of this last term and from the national press we learn that there is some form of industrial action which the lecturers are taking but neither university has informed the students or their parents about any details of this action.

This lack of responsibility of these lecturers towards their students is bound to have an adverse effect on the students’ progress and, I feel sure, indicates that the universities are taking money for fees to which they are not entitled.

We wonder if other universities are being so cavalier in their actions.
