THE majority of local people of Botley were delighted by the unanimous vote of the Vale planning committee to refuse permission for Doric’s proposed development at West Way.
This was described as a victory for democracy and common sense. I, like many people, was of the understanding that, now that a full two years have elapsed since the Vale entered into its conditional contract with Doric and that planning permission has not been obtained, the contract would expire or could be terminated.
Not so. The leader of the council, Matthew Barber, has stated that although he is ‘disappointed’ that Doric has appealed against the decision, the contract has been extended.
Given the overwhelming opposition to this proposed development one would have thought that the clear message to Doric would be, ‘you have not been able to provide a suitable development proposal, so we do not wish to sell our land to you. Botley deserves better.’ But no, the Vale still seems to support this development.
The blight and anxiety in Botley needs to continue for some further indefinite time.
The 20 empty rooms in Field House will remain empty, when they could be providing comfortable homes for those who need them.
Does the Vale consider this is the right and proper way to proceed in a democratic society?
Has it really signed a contract that forces it to go against the wishes of its own council members and ‘common sense’.
I too am ‘disappointed’, but also sad and angry.
