Musician and music publicist Seb Reynolds of PinDrop enjoys the clash between old and new achievements
December was a very exciting month for myself and my gig promotions company PinDrop. We were thrilled to have been invited to book the launch gig as part of the opening celebrations for the Jeremy Deller-curated exhibition of the work of Andy Warhol and William Morris entitled Love Is Enough.
The show is stunning, and I highly recommend getting along ASAP. For the gig we booked American pop trio Rainbow Reservoir, Swedish songstress Julia Meijer and bright young things Balloon Ascents.
Alongside the Love Is Enough gig we also put on a night of experimental drone/ambient music entitled Mid-Winter Drone Fest, which featured noise artist Lee Riley, Mike from Masiro, James from We Aeronauts, and myself making drones and noises all around the café and basement space, as well as sets from Oxford electronica hero After The Thought, post-industrial ambient group Paddox and internationally acclaimed solo noise artist Petrels, who stole the show with his spectacularly well composed set of spaced-out electronic synth tones, fractious noise manipulation, pulsing techno beats and a set finale that could be playing at the end of the world, featuring oceanic drones and a huge chorus of voices repeating an epic, major key round as the backing visuals by artist Laid Eyes manipulated images of battle ships and abstract light and colour washes. In one word: astounding.
Not so long ago I reviewed Oxford-based live techno band Maiians at Modern Art Oxford… I really think that Maiians and Petrels on the same bill would be a truly top-notch booking. I hope we manage to make it happen in 2015! I was also thrilled to have been able to host for the fourth year running a Christmas celebration benefit concert to support the work of Oxford homeless charity The Gatehouse. The Gatehouse offers an invaluable drop-in service six days a week for those who are homeless or vulnerably housed in the city. So far, we have raised more than £2,354 for the cause. We had many of our favourite local folk acts, including Bethany Weimers, who recently released her midwinter hymnal Winter Heart, along with a beautiful stop-motion video made by Bethany and her partner artist Merlin Porter. Please do look it up on youtube when you get a chance; it is truly stunning and took Merlin and Bethany a huge amount of work and love!
Coming up in January we have three more shows as part of our residency at Modern Art Oxford, celebrating us entering our tenth year of gig promotion in Oxford. On January 24 we have Arabic fusion ensemble Brickwork Lizards, who headlined the first ever PinDrop at the Port Mahon, nine years ago. Then on January 27, a gig celebrating teen movie soundtracks to tie in with the Oxford premiere of teen movie doc Beyond Clueless, and lastly on January 30, we have a gig curated by composer of Alexander The Great Folk operetta Huck. It’s going to be a great month — so do come along!
