THIS year’s World Pooh Sticks Championships will not be held at Day’s Lock in Little Wittenham, organisers have said.

The Rotary Club of Oxford Spires says the event has become a victim of its own success, with more than 1,000 people turning up, and there is no longer space to accommodate them.

The contest sees people drop sticks off one side of a bridge into the river to see which stick comes out the other side first.

The club is appealing for suggestions of other bridges where it could hold the event in March.

The championships, which celebrate AA Milne’s book Winnie the Pooh, in which the game was invented, have been held at Little Wittenham for 31 years.
