A SUPPORT centre for children with hearing problems at an Abingdon school has been approved for closure.

Rush Common School in Abingdon said no-one had signed up to use its Southern Hearing Resource Base last year or this.

And on Monday Oxfordshire County Council cabinet member for children and education Melinda Tilley said it could close.

The school said it plans to provide support for hearing-impared children in other ways.

Following a four-week public consultation, council officers backed the plan.

They said no children at the school were using the centre, and more can attend primary schools because of better treatment early in life.

The officers wrote to Mrs Tilley: “The provision required has altered as technological and medical developments have progressed, and therefore the service provided will not remain the same.

“There will not be a reduction in support for future pupils that require it, but rather it will be delivered in more appropriate ways.”

Three people responded to the consultation and backed the plan.
