I REFER to your article (January 3) about recycling.
Since the recent completion of the commissioning of the Energy Recycling Facility at Ardley, all the Oxfordshire domestic waste which is not being reycled is being sent there, rather than being landfilled. Any residue from incineration which cannot in turn be recycled is being landfilled, amounting to much less than five per cent of the domestic waste.
Your newspaper and Cherwell District Council are right to raise the issue of recycling rates – and Cherwell’s 80 per cent aspiration is an achievable figure.
Our top stories
We urge all residents to help us achieve this across the county by putting all their waste, capable of being recycled, into the correct bin. Every little helps in improving the recycling rates.
I note in the Oxford City Council’s draft corporate plan – currently out for consultation – that it only recycles 46 per cent of its waste.
It has a long way to go to achieve the current rates elsewhere in the county, let alone the levels which Cherwell thinks can be achieved. If it wants any help from the county council, it knows how to contact us.

Oxfordshire County Council Cabinet Member for the Environment
