Laws to protect victims of crime abroad demanded by the mother of a former Oxford United player will come into force by the end of next week.
Maggie Hughes’s son, Robert – known as Robbie –- played for United in 2005 and was left brain damaged after an attack outside a nightclub in Malia, Crete in 2008.
After his attack, Mrs Hughes campaigned and forced the European Union to issue new rules to help victims of serious crime abroad.
By December 11 member states must implement ways to give foreign victims rights to medical and legal services as well as translators and advice up to 48 hours after crimes take place.
