WHILE plants outside are struggling with sharp frosts, University of Oxford Botanic Garden is working hard to keep their plants alive and well.

One plant that thrives despite the cold is the red poinsettia, a favourite during the festive period.

Trainee gardener Tonia Friedrick, 37, said: “This time of year we need to go into each glass house to check each individual plant.”

Guests can now see the results of the staff’s hard work at the Botanic Garden, which reopened on Boxing Day, and the Arboretum, which reopened yesterday.
