EXCEPTIONAL medics were celebrated at a ceremony last night.
The Oxford Mail teamed up with Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust (OUHT) for the Hospital Heroes awards, to celebrate the outstanding work of its hospital staff.
And yesterday the winners were revealed during the trust’s Annual Staff Recognition Awards at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History.
Diabetic consultant Dr Garry Tan won the Individual award after helping bus driver William Brown control his diabetes.
The renal and transplant teams based at the Churchill Hospital won the team award after helping chef Kevin Beach battle kidney failure, as well as supporting his family when his partner Karen Gomme donated her kidney to save his life.
To celebrate hospital staff, readers were invited to nominate the unsung heroes who have made a real difference to their lives.
Nominations were received within two categories, the Hospital Heroes Team award and the Hospital Heroes Individual award.
Oxford Mail editor Simon O’Neill and chief executive of OUHT Sir Jonathan Michael then had the difficult task of selecting the winners from a total of 10 shortlisted entries.
The awards were launched last year when the Oxford Mail joined forces with the OUHT to coincide with the 65th anniversary of the NHS.
The trust runs Oxford’s John Radcliffe and Churchill hospitals, as well as the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre and Banbury’s Horton Hospital.
