An underlying concern whenever environmental initiatives are mentioned is that it will require us to use less, to do less, to stop having fun.

The Community Action Group (CAG) Project works to disprove that myth, by showcasing the latest ideas and opportunities in sustainable living in a community near you. Chances are you’ve taken part already without even realising it.

Perhaps you’ve bought fresh bread from one of Oxford’s community markets, or organic local vegetables from the Cultivate VegVan.

Maybe you’ve learned how to fix and maintain your bicycle at the Broken Spoke Bike Co-op.
Or you might have bought shares in one of the many community-owned renewable energy schemes being installed at schools across the county.

In 2013/14, Oxfordshire’s network of grassroots environmental groups, the largest of its kind in the UK with over 50 voluntary organisations across the county, held a staggering 1,051 events. That’s almost three every day. Over 16,000 hours were put in by the network, nearly two full years of continuous volunteering.

Alongside benefits such as healthier and cheaper meals, reduced fuel bills and increased skills, the projects are also having a positive impact on the planet. Renewable energy is generated, while energy usage is reduced. Waste and carbon emissions are avoided.

Crucially the steps towards a low carbon future are all positive, embracing the opportunities to improve our lives, and the lives of those around us, along the way.

The most important impact of the CAG Project, however, is social. The roots of the environmental movement are in co-operation and resilience, which is why it is such a perfect fit with community action.
Members of the network don’t need to be involved for the same reasons, but their ability to share with and learn from each other while helping their communities become more empowered is what has seen the network grow from three groups in 2003 to almost 60 in 2014.

So how would you like to get involved?

It’s never been easier to find a group near you, or even to start your own!
If you’re not quite ready for that, then you are very welcome to the 1,000-plus events each year where you might just pick up a bargain, learn a skill or simply find out something new about the community outside your front door.
