OXSRAD is a unique local charity that provides sports and recreation opportunities for those with disabilities living in Oxfordshire. It has been operating continuously for the 25 years since its opening by Princess Diana in 1989.
It has always had specialist equipment for meeting the needs of the disabled, but two years ago, following a successful appeal, it spent over £50,000 on bringing the centre up to date with new equipment and flooring. It has just completed another successful year with projects being funded by Children in Need, Comic Relief and the People’s Postcode Lottery.
During the year Oxsrad has received visits from many well-wishers, including the Lord-Lieutenant of Oxfordshire, the Lord Mayor of Oxford, the High Sheriff of Oxfordshire and local MP, Andrew Smith
However, the aim of the charity is not just to cater for the disabled in isolation. It provides an inclusive environment that brings people of all abilities together, where disabled and able bodied mix and take part in the same programmes. This helps build confidence and reduce the stigma that can be attached to disability.
Over 1,000 people use Oxsrad either through direct membership or via an associate organisation. All people in the area are invited to join.
Indeed the membership of all members of the community is important both for integration and to help financially.
For those looking for a fitness centre, even fitness fanatics, Oxsrad could be for you. It has a fully-equipped gym, sensory room, two halls, a studio, treatment room and spa bath that all can use. Apart from the gym, there are many sessions running at Oxsrad including archery, zumba, kickboxing, “Young at Heart” fitness, art, etc.
Oxsrad runs a youth club and sports schemes for disabled and non-disabled children and everyone is very welcome to come along. Contact the reception on 01865 741336 or visit www.oxsrad.org to see what they do.
Going forward, Oxsrad needs to ensure stable funding, maximise the benefits from their volunteers and develop further programmes and facilities. For example, it would like to add a therapy pool to its facility.
If you think you could help with programmes like these, please contact the Oxsrad office or the vice-chairman, Brian Buchan on house@buchanhome.co.uk
