DRIVERS suffered further traffic delays yesterday as accidents and a landslip added to the woes of commuters.

On Monday, roadworks brought city centre traffic to a standstill, with many journeys taking three or four times longer than expected.

Crashes during the morning rush-hour yesterday delayed drivers on the A44 Woodstock Road at Yarnton, Botley Road in Oxford, and on Tythrop Way in Thame, but South Central Ambulance said they weren’t called to any collisions.

There was also heavy traffic on the A34 southbound between Oxford and the Hinksey Hill interchange.

Oxford Bus Company buses were badly affected, with some X3 services between Oxford and Abingdon experiencing delays of up to 50 minutes.

To add to delays caused by work at the Kennington roundabout, county council highways engineers spotted subsidence in Bagley Wood Road, Kennington.

Oxford Bus Company bus drivers using Bagley Wood Road to avoid the Kennington roundabout found they were experiencing further delays getting into the city.

Spokesman Phil Ashworth described the area around Kennington as “chaotic”.

He said: “The whole of the city is very sensitive at the moment with drivers using alternative routes. That is having an impact on routes you would not normally expect to be affected.”

Oxfordshire County Council spokesman Paul Smith said Bagley Wood Road had not collapsed.

He said: “Some subsidence has been spotted on the edge of one side of the road.

“Clearly the council would want the problem to be diagnosed and repaired as soon as possible.”

Asked if diverted buses could have caused the subsidence, Mr Smith said: “Experts are currently assessing the issue.”
