SO, once again it’s the annual nonsense of the Abingdon Street Fair. What a great idea, plonk some serious obstructions into a town that already has some of the worst traffic delays for many miles.
“Oh, it’s traditional” do I hear you say? Well, bear-baiting, putting kids up chimneys and putting people to death in various gruesome ways for something like poaching a rabbit were also ‘traditional’ in the Middle Ages, and society has moved on from those. So there’s a Charter, dates back many hundreds of years?
Get it modified, abolished, whatever, our Parliament has had many old statutes amended or expunged over the years. There are plenty of open spaces round town that would be more suitable sites, and far less disruptive, so park the fair there.
Today I met someone who has the misfortune to live off Ock Street. She has to travel in and out at various times for her business, and run a family – her routine is completely disrupted while this nonsense is in town. I thought the local shops had a hard time anyway, attracting business, without extra nuisance?
I don’t waste time trying to get into town while it’s on. I take my business to Wantage or Didcot instead, as do others from Drayton, Steventon and Sutton Courtenay. Oh, by the way, just who pays for the massive effort in re-routing traffic, and clearing up the mess?
Tony Holmes, Whitehorns Way, Drayton
