PUPILS at an Oxford primary school did their sums by torchlight as they learned how to save electricity.

Youngsters at Wood Farm Primary School in Titup Hall Drive took part in Switch Off Day as part of the Oxfordshire Green Schools programme.

The initiative is run by the charity Groundwork South and funded by Oxfordshire County Council and Thames Water.

Year Six pupils looked at energy data online in a maths lesson and compared how much electricity they saved on Friday compared to other days of the week.

Teacher Louise Holman said: “Everyone enjoyed seeing how much electricity we could save.”

Among the pupils taking part was 10-year-olds Benji Nela.

He said: “Most people are not used to not having any power. It was kind of weird having assembly without music so one of the teachers played the piano.”

All schools in the county can enter an energy-saving competition to win water-saving devices for their schools.
