PROPOSALS for a memorial to in Bonn Square to remember 28 Oxford residents who died in the Spanish civil war are set to be rejected tonight.
The International Brigade Memorial Trust has lodged plans with Oxford City Council for the monument, but planning officers have said it would clutter the square. They have recommended that the West Area planning committee refuse the application, which would involve installing a two metre by one metre granite stone towards the back of the Square.
The rejection was based “purely on planning grounds and not against the principle of honouring our servicemen and women,” officers said.
Also set to be considered in the meeting is a two-storey extension to the back of a building in Fairacres Road, as well as an extension to a building in Portland Road, both recommended for approval at Town Hall at 6.30pm.
