IT’S a small world after all for these model railway enthusiasts.

Train modellers who specialise in one of the smallest model scales, known as ‘Z gauge,’ gathered in Oxfordshire for a national celebration of their creations.

The Zedex 2014 event at Didcot Civic Hall was hosted by the Oxford and District Model Railway Club on Sunday for ‘Z gauge’ railways modellers.

Z gauge modellers work on one of the smallest of railway scales, which is 1:220.

Brian Denton, a member of the Abingdon and District Model Railway Club for 35 years, displayed his own model railway at the exhibition.

He said: “It’s to show what we have been doing and to meet up with people who are like-minded modellers and it’s just to get together because some of these people you only meet once a year and that’s it.

“In this country there is not a lot of Z scale modelling exhibitions. It’s something that’s based in, I think, Japan and in the continent.”

The 68-year-old added: “I had a train set when I was a kid and I enjoyed that and never got very far with it. In those days very few people built layouts like we know today.

“But I came back to it because I have always had an interest in railways and I found that I had the time to get involved.”

The event included more than 20 working layouts.
