Whilst I missed the original article-apparently by Alex Wynick – I have seen the responding letters of Helen Marshall and David Diment concerning Healthwatch Oxfordshire’s survey highlighting Asian women’s difficulties having private visits to GPs (September 26).
As a nurse working in a hospital within the NHS, we do come across people using our services who do not share our language.
One instance concerned a gentleman needing emergency surgery who had proved challenging on admission due to his inability to speak English. Looking back through his medical notes, the same problem had occurred at an outpatients appointment 25 years previously. He had not bothered to address the subject in the intervening years. That attitude is what makes me really angry.
